NELSON ON HIS PILLAR

(Paper to the Belfast Literary Society)

Dennis Kennedy, 3rd October, 2005

The centre of Dublin was dominated for a century and a half by a tall pillar with a statue of the great British hero Horatio Lord Nelson on top of it. The massive Doric column was completed in 1809, almost four decades before Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square. This paper recounts the long life and sudden death, by dynamite in 1966, of Dublin's 'Pillar'.
